Dan O'Grady returns to North Dakota after kidnapping a leprechaun in Ireland in 1983. After burying the wealth, O'Grady discovers the leprechaun murdered his wife. O'Grady imprisons the leprechaun with a four-leaf clover. Stroke prevents him from burning him.

After ten years have passed, J. D. Redding decides to spend the summer at the O'Grady farmhouse with his daughter Tory, who is now a teenager. The farmhouse is now being repainted with the aid of contract workers Nathan Murphy, his 10-year-old brother Alex, and their friend Ozzie Jones, who is considered to be somewhat dimwitted. While Ozzie is scouring the basement, he overhears the leprechaun calling for help and mistakes him for a little child. After Ozzie examines the gold and mistakenly consumes a coin while doing so, they conceal it in an old well in the belief that this would restore Ozzie's mental capacity.

The farm leprechaun fools J. D. by pretending to be a cat and biting his hand. Tory and the others transport the leprechaun to the hospital. Alex and Ozzie visit a pawn shop to inspect the gold's purity. The leprechaun kills the owner, Joe, for stealing his gold and polishes his shoes before departing. On his way home, the leprechaun constructs a go-kart and gets caught for speeding. Leprechaun chases policeman into woods and murders him. The leprechaun returns to the farmhouse and shines every shoe he sees. After dumping off J. D., the group returns to the farm. Nathan is injured by a leprechaun-set bear trap after discovering the house ransacked. The gang beats the leprechaun with rocks and clubs outside.

After finding a gun in the house, the residents take many shots at the leprechaun. After trying to depart the site, they find that the truck's engine has been wrecked by the leprechaun. After crashing the car with the go-kart, the leprechaun terrorizes the group until Ozzie and Alex confess that they found the pot of gold. Tory fishes the purse out of the well and presents it to the leprechaun. Having decided that the worst is over, they go to the hospital. As the leprechaun tallies his gold, he learns that Ozzie stole the last coin. He threatens them because he thinks they're trying to trick him, but Ozzie reveals that O'Grady had a stroke and was taken to the hospital. The group distracts the leprechaun by throwing dirty shoes to him, and he ends up going to shine them as Tory drives off in her vehicle. To learn the secret of killing the leprechaun, Tory travels to the home.
